Beirut, MH: “We extend our condolences to the victims and those injured in the devasting explosions. Our operators are fine. Our hearts go out to the people and city, that were already strained”

Rome (NEVCS/21), 4 August 2020 – Paolo Naso, coordinator of Mediterranean Hope, the Refugee and Migrant Programme of the Federation of Protestant Churches in Italy, a project that has been managing the humanitarian corridors from Beirut since 2016, says:

“We extend our condolences to the victims and those injured in the explosions that took place a few hours ago in Beirut. We have contacted our operators who are currently in the Lebanese capital to organise the resumption of the humanitarian corridors for Syrian refugees: fortunately, they are all well. Only one of our collaborators suffered a slight facial wound.
We hope that the death toll will not increase further and that all those rescued and saved are given the care they need.

We hope that full light will be shed on this very serious episode that has struck a city and country that has already been hit hard by the economic crisis and the dramatic situation of the refugees.

We are with the people of Beirut, with our friends and acquaintances in Lebanon, with the refugees and the most vulnerable people who were already suffering considerably in these times of fear and pain.”
