Mario Giro: On Tuesday, The Humanitarian Corridors’ Project Will Be Presented at UN

“On June 21st, the ‘humanitarian corridors’ project will be presented to the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York”, said Mario Giro, Deputy Foreign Minister. Today at Fiumicino, Mario Giro, together with other civil and religious authorities, has welcomed the arrival of the fourth group of 81 refugees, mostly Syrians, from Lebanon.

Today 81 refugees (29 Christians and 52 Muslims), mostly Syrians, including 30 children, two serious disabled people and an elderly woman have arrived at Fiumicino Airport via Alitalia flight from Beirut thanks to the humanitarian corridors. These refugees were welcomed by Marco Impagliazzo, President of the Community of Sant’Egidio, Paolo Naso from FCEI (Federation of Protestant Churches in Italy) and the Tavola Valdese (Waldensian Board), and Daniela Rotondaro, ambassador of the Republic of San Marino which houses one family from Homs.

“We are proud to be the first example of international improvement of humanitarian corridors – said ambassador Daniela Rotondaro – and, as a member of the United Nations, we will do our best to support the initiative at the UN General Assembly.”
The group that today reached Italy is the fourth largest group of refugees arrived safely thanks to humanitarian corridors for a total of 281 people.

The Community of S. Egidio has asked that humanitarian corridors could be adopted by other European countries.
“We witness every day – new sea tragedies, many innocent dying and children above all. We have shown, together with the Italian Protestant Churches, that there is a possible alternative. It is urgent that other European governments adopt this system because it can save lives and ensure security for all citizens thanks to the checks carried out before setting off. Moreover, Humanitarian corridors allow an easier integration in the civil and social structure of the host country “. This is the call launched by the President of the Community of Sant’Egidio, Marco Impagliazzo to promote the model of humanitarian corridors.

This morning Marco Impagliazzo have spoken during the briefing in Fiumicino upon the arrival of 81 Syrian refugees, who have reached Italy thanks to the humanitarian corridors project that has been realised by the Community of Sant’Egidio together with FCEI and the Tavola Valdese.
